Brett Harkness Does It Again - Lighting Workshop - Liverpool

Brett Harkness Does it Again - Lighting Workshop - Liverpool

Does what? Smashes it out of the park… obviously!

For those of you who have been around here a while, you should be well versed with the name Brett Harkness by now. Honestly, it’s not difficult to see why this guy’s top of his game when it comes to Photography. Not just a one-trick pony with his stunning wedding imagery, he’s also a magician when it comes to lighting and his portraiture work.

Sunday Morning I headed up to Liverpool for his latest Lighting Workshop. With everything going on in the world right now I think it’s what we needed. The chance to learn as much as I could and have tons of fun along the way.

I’m going to start by saying the obvious…

All images shown here were taken under guidance by Brett himself and are of trained models. The location, number of attendees, and current UK guidelines were all adhered to. Whilst that meant numbers were reduced, it meant that there was more one-to-one mentorship throughout the day.

Now, back to me…

Firstly, the production that goes into these images is something quite special (I’m not talking post-production either). It’s quite something to watch all the pieces of the puzzle come together (and be involved in it) and whilst I’m not going to give the game away or go into vast detail. (if you want that, you NEED to get on one of Brett’s courses) I will say that the day involved learning a lot of the method behind the images that make Brett’s portraiture work stand out amongst a sea of others.

The pace difference between a wedding and portrait work was quite refreshing, although it actually takes more willing than expected to slow down, dissect each element and tweak as necessary.

We used an assortment of lighting and modifiers throughout the day to really understand not only how they differ but where they can fit in the toolbox that is Photography and how they each can be tweaked in turn to create different results.

As they say, it’s inches that make the difference.

I’ll end simply by saying, I had an amazing day. It was great to catch up with old faces, put faces to names, and meet some new people.

Special mentions go to:

The Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool for hosting
Brett Harkness for running the darn thing!
Louise Mills for helping out (P.S. her arm features in one of these images - A visual element we all liked)
To Nick, Kevin, and Katy for being a great team to work alongside
and to the two models for being fantastic to work with
